Uruguay Digital Nomad Visa

Uruguay is one of the smallest countries in South America, but that doesn’t detract from its charm! In fact, more and more people are choosing to travel to this country, becoming captivated by its breathtaking nature, which blends seamlessly with its lively atmosphere.

Between Argentina and Brazil, Uruguay undoubtedly brings together the best of both countries, so I’m happy to report that you can now apply for the Uruguay digital nomad visa!

From Punta del Este to Colonia del Sacramento or Montevideo, you can now live and work in this South American gem.

In today’s article, I’ll cover everything you need to know about this visa for digital nomads. But, as always, I’ll give you a brief summary first!

  • The visa has a duration of 180 days, with the possibility of renewal for the same period.
  • The application process is simple and quick.
  • There are no restrictions on nationality or work activity.
  • It is essential that digital nomads work for companies located outside Uruguay.

How to apply for the Uruguay digital nomad visa

One of the advantages that characterises the Uruguay digital nomad visa is the simplicity of the application process. In fact, it offers remote workers two different ways to obtain the visa:

  • Create a user profile on the gub.uy website or any other electronic identification method such as the digital identity card, the Identidad Mobile – Abitab and the TuID – Antel.
  • Start the online procedure to obtain the provisional identity card through this link, and then include the requested information and documents.
  • Select a method of payment for the required fees and authorise the payment.

Note that this process must be completed in Spanish. If your Spanish is a little rusty, you can always use the translate feature on Google Chrome.

Uruguay Digital Nomad Visa: Requirements and Benefits in 2024 1

How the Uruguay digital nomad visa works

Uruguay is one of the most recent countries to launch its visa for digital nomads, and it has undoubtedly learned from the mistakes of other countries.

The application procedure is probably one of the simplest and fastest, making it much easier for applicants.

In terms of duration, it is a 180-day visa that allows you to live and work in Uruguay as long as you work remotely and for companies or individuals located outside the country.

In addition, it is a visa that can be renewed for a further 180 days, although you will have to present the necessary documentation again! More specifically, you’ll need the following documents:

  • A certificate issued by a vaccination centre in Uruguay, certifying that you comply with the Uruguayan vaccination schedule.
  • A declaration to prove your source of income.
  • A valid Uruguayan identity card.
  • A certificate of lack of criminal record officially apostilled.

✅ Pros of the Uruguay digital nomad visa

  • It has the possibility of renewal for an additional 180 days after the expiry of the visa.
  • It does not require a lot of documentation for the application.
  • The application process is very fast, simple and completely digital.
  • It is not necessary to declare taxes as a digital nomad.

❌ Cons of the Uruguay digital nomad visa

  • Citizens who cannot enter the country without a visa must first apply for a tourist visa and then for the digital nomad visa.
  • You cannot pay the fees with a foreign bank account.

Uruguay digital nomad visa requirements

To apply for the Uruguay digital nomad visa, you need to meet a series of requirements and present a few documents, but not as many as with many other similar visas.

Here are the requirements you must meet to apply:

  • Have a valid passport for the entire duration of the visa.
  • Submit a passport photo with the application form.
  • Demonstrate a set of financial means in the form of an affidavit confirming your ability to support yourself financially in Uruguay.
  • Have a clean criminal record in all countries where you have resided for more than 6 months in the last 5 years.

What activities are allowed and prohibited

The Uruguay digital nomad visa does not have any type of restriction in terms of work activity. It is only necessary that the worker meets one of these three requirements:

  • Be a remote worker affiliated with a company located outside Uruguay.
  • Be a self-employed worker providing services for individuals or companies located outside Uruguay.
  • Be the owner of an international company.

Which nationalities are allowed?

To apply for the Uruguay digital nomad visa, there are no nationality restrictions. However, it is important to take into account that some citizens will need a visa to enter the country to begin with.

At the Uruguayan Ministerio del Interior, you can check which nationalities need a visa for entry, I’ll leave you the link right here!

Can I apply for the digital nomad visa if I am in Uruguay?

If you are already in the country as a tourist, you can still apply for the Uruguay digital nomad visa, no problem! To do so, all you have to do is go to the corresponding offices with the documentation that I have mentioned above.

Specifically, you can apply at any Oficina de la Dirección Nacional, in the Departamento de Certificaciones, as well as in the Inspectorías de la Dirección Nacional de Migración.

This process must be completed in Spanish. Although you’ll find some people who speak English in Uruguay, including those employed in public office positions and the tourism industry, most people in Uruguay do not.

All the more reason to brush up on your Spanish!

Is it possible to bring a partner or children with you?

Currently, it is not possible to bring a partner or children with you on the Uruguay digital nomad visa. This means that each family member who wants to travel with you must submit their application individually.

Is travel insurance compulsory for Uruguay?

The Ministry of Tourism of Uruguay offers travellers tons of practical information for their stay in the country. Among this information, is the explicit recommendation to take out travel insurance for the duration of your stay in Uruguay.

Although it is not a mandatory requirement to obtain the digital nomad visa, it is highly recommended! Therefore, it is essential to find the best option suited to your needs. So, let’s take a look at the best travel insurance for travel to Uruguay.
