The first thing to keep in mind is that most insurance policies do not cover risks that arise in your workplace. No matter what you do, your insurance will not cover you in the event of a workplace accident.
At the time of my working holiday experience, I went with a Working Holiday travel insurance from Chapka, as it was the best WH travel insurance on the market.
Mondo and Chapka insurance are the most popular alternatives when it comes to working holiday goers and volunteers.
Travel insurance for studies
If you’re leaving to take part in an internship, student exchange programme, or to work in a company, it’s essential that you take out a health insurance policy that covers you in case of an accident or health problem.

Chapka Insurance’s Cap Student package stands out from the crowd, as it offers a comprehensive package at a good price considering the guarantees included.
Luckily, there are insurance policies specifically designed to meet the needs of this type of traveller.
Most internship or study travel insurance plans cover medical expenses, accidents, or illnesses for 1 to 12 months depending on the length of your studies or internship.
Ultimately, the level of coverage you need depends on the country you’re moving to, so take some time to consider what the possible risks involved are.

The policies that appear in this travel insurance comparison are also the most popular among travellers, for their rates, and the quality and efficiency of their claims processes.
Popularity of the insurer
An important parameter for this travel insurance comparison is the reputation and reliability of the insurers.
To establish our ranking, we asked for comments and feedback from travellers regarding each insurer, which enabled us to come up with an overall popularity level.
Profiles of travellers to be insured
There are 9 different types of traveller profiles. Choosing your insurance based on your profile will ensure you get the best deal, with the right amount of coverage.
- Singles and couples for stays of less than 3 months
- Families travelling less than 3 months
- Digital nomads or world travellers for stays of more than 3 months
- Working holiday abroad
- Expatriates
- Au pairs
- Students or trainees
- Volunteers
- Schengen Visa
Quite often, insurance providers have created a specific policy for each profile.
What is the purpose of travel insurance?
One might ask whether it is worthwhile to take out travel insurance. Indeed, it is likely that your country has certain bank cards or social security schemes that guarantee “basic” coverage in case of a problem.
However, to be fully covered, you should take out private travel insurance because at the end of the day, prevention is better than a cure!
You should always contract your insurance before you leave, as it is often impossible to do so after your departure.
Health insurance and social security
European citizens travelling outside Europe
If you are a European citizen travelling outside Europe, you are not covered, and you should always take out travel insurance. If you don’t, you will have to pay all health costs up front if something goes wrong.
Ultimately, travel insurance is an investment, and there are plenty of great options on the market. Your best course of action is to use this travel insurance comparison to find the policy that best suits your needs as a traveller.
European citizens travelling within Europe
For travel within Europe, as a European citizen, you can apply for a European Health Insurance Card. However, carefully consider whether this coverage is sufficient, as there are many incidents that are not covered by this scheme.
For example, you cannot travel for the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment, and the European health insurance card does not cover things like stolen belongings or cancellation coverage.
Non-European citizens travelling to Europe
For non-European citizens travelling to the Schengen area, taking out Schengen travel insurance is a requirement to enter the area. Check out this article to compare the best insurance options for travel to Europe.

My experience with repatriation insurance
During my trip to Vietnam, I was stranded for 15 days in Ho Chi Minh with a serious eye infection I got as a result of the pollution in the city. This was the first time I had to use my travel insurance…
Without insurance, the trip would have been an absolute nightmare. Remember that an accident or a small health problem can happen to anyone, even if you take all the precautions in the world! There are many things you simply can’t foresee.
As soon as I arrived at the hospital, the medical staff checked the validity of my insurance policy before I went for a consultation. The doctor’s diagnosis: “You need to be repatriated urgently, I can’t take care of you here.”
The cost of the emergency repatriation was around €7,000, which corresponded to 2 plane tickets for the repatriation, 4 consultations with a specialist doctor, medication, and hotel accommodation for 15 days. So, I must reiterate, travel insurance is an essential investment.

In this section, I have selected the offers that include Covid-19 cover. Surprisingly, the level of coverage does not always match the price. So, why pay more?

Like 1 in 3 travellers, I had to use my travel insurance. During my trip to Vietnam, I had to be repatriated from Ho Chi Minh, bringing my trip to a screeching halt.
After this unfortunate experience, I decided to make a travel insurance comparison, to help other travellers find the right insurance policy, and to remind them of the importance of taking our adequate travel insurance!
Travel insurance comparison Covid-19
Since the pandemic, medical expenses are expensive and travel insurance is mandatory in many countries around the world.
It’s vital that you take out travel insurance abroad, especially if you are travelling to one of these countries: Algeria, Australia, Bahamas, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Egypt, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Nepal, Paraguay, Russia, Seychelles, Thailand, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United States.
For these countries, you will need your tourist visa and a certificate of travel insurance.
Be careful when choosing your travel insurance. If the policy includes “Covid-19 coverage”, this indicates that a Covid-19 travel insurance certificate will be provided to you when you subscribe and that you will be covered in case of a problem.
Travel insurance policies that do not include this guarantee may also issue this certificate if you ask for it.
How to choose the best travel insurance?
Summary of important points to check before buying travel insurance:
- Some insurance policies cover extreme sports. If you intend to do specific activities, check that the insurance covers them. If not, most insurance providers offer an adventure sports add-on.
- If you want to avoid problems with strikes and flight cancellations, consider taking out a policy with cancellation insurance, or add it as an add-on.
- If you are travelling with valuable equipment such as a drone, professional camera, or laptop, remember to check the cover limits for theft or loss of luggage, or if the policy includes coverage for electronic equipment.
In most cases, there are 5 important benefits to check before you buy:
- Coverage for medical expenses
- Compensation for lost or stolen luggage
- Repatriation in case of accident, illness, or death
- Reimbursement for travel cancellation costs
- Civil liability cover abroad
Depending on the valuables you’re taking with you (camera, laptop, drone, etc.). And, depending on your sporting activities (surfing, scuba diving, skiing, etc.), you will need to opt for extra coverage against theft of equipment in the event of a claim.
If you’re a digital nomad, coverage for electronic equipment is particularly important.
