Useful tips for travelling to Schengen at the best price in 2024

Prices in Europe, and especially the Schengen area, can be expensive, but after all my research and first-hand experience, I’ve compiled some travelling hacks! They take a little effort, but trust me, it’s worth it!

There are countless ways to make your travels cheaper. Choosing insurance that is tailored to your needs is vital, but remember that flights, accommodation, the card you use, and how you book your activities are crucial factors as well.

Here are a few tricks I’ve learned over the years, they’ll help you save money on your travels, so you can focus on the things you enjoy about travelling. If you follow these tips, you might just find that by the end of your trip, you have enough money left over to explore an extra destination on your route home. Imagine that!

Fly at reduced prices!

You know, flights don’t cost the same from all countries! To pay for my cheapest flights, I use NordVPN.

Basically, it’s a private network that allows you to access Internet sites from locations other than your own, and this can have some serious benefits:

In March 2024, enjoy a 59% discount on NordVPN.

Flights from Barcelona to Buenos Aires don’t cost the same if you buy them from Spain as from India, for example. So, once you’ve installed NordVPN, simply access websites like Skyscanner and compare prices by entering as if you were browsing from different countries.

The 8 countries from which it is cheapest to buy flights are: Malaysia, Bulgaria, India, Turkey, Romania, Indonesia, Portugal, and Thailand. Once you have NordVPN, head over to Skyscanner and start paying reduced prices for flights all over the world!

Is Schengen travel insurance mandatory?

Yes. According to a Regulation of the European Parliament, it is necessary to take out Schengen travel insurance if you live outside its economic zone and wish to visit one or more of the countries that comprise the Schengen.

This Regulation was adopted by the European Parliament and the Council on July 13, 2009, and entered into force on April 5, 2010.

Schengen travel insurance can be defined as medical insurance that offers a set of very specific coverages for tourists travelling to any country in the Schengen area.

Schengen travel insurance: what are the requirements for a Schengen visa?

Travel insurance to enter the Schengen area must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum coverage of €30,000. It must extend the entire duration of your trip.
  • Covers expenses related to repatriation, emergency medical care, and emergency treatment or death in hospital.
  • Cover all countries within the Schengen area.

Does the insurance policy have to cover all Schengen countries?

Yes, your travel insurance must cover all Schengen member states. For those who visit the Schengen area, they will see that the region is like a single country, as it offers freedom of movement.

For example, when travelling to the Schengen area, you will only receive the stamp on your passport from the country of arrival, and the country of departure.

The countries that form part of the Schengen area are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

Read more: Best travel insurance to Europe

So, travel insurance is a fundamental requirement to obtain a Schengen visa, which allows travellers to move freely throughout the Schengen area, if their country of residence does not have a specific agreement with a Schengen country.

What should Schengen travel insurance cover?

Aside from the Schengen visa requirements listed above, there are a number of other benefits that your Schengen travel insurance should cover. This is to ensure that you are covered for any unforeseen events during your trip.

  • Medical expenses: the insurer must cover your medical expenses if you get sick or have an accident in Europe.
  • Lost luggage: can be reimbursed in case of loss, or theft of luggage, personal belongings, or travel documents.
  • Flight cancellations and delays: if you experience flight cancellations or delays, you will be entitled to a refund.
  • Medical emergency (accident or illness) in the Schengen area.
  • Repatriation or funeral expenses abroad.
  • Delayed baggage (and emergency replacement of essentials).
  • Travel delays due to weather.

It’s always a good idea to read the full policy when contracting Schengen travel insurance, as insurance providers typically offer additional services that may affect the price, depending on the insurance plan, and the destination you choose.

You want to avoid paying for coverage you don’t need!

Keep in mind that insurers generally cover pregnancy expenses, however, most only provide cover if the trip occurs during the first 3 months of pregnancy. Make sure you contact your insurance company if you have any questions.

Is the European Health Card valid throughout the Schengen area?

The European Health Card or TSE is valid throughout the Schengen area, but you should know that it does not have extensive coverage, such as repatriation or private health care.

For this reason, I strongly recommend that you take out a travel insurance policy that offers the right coverage based on your needs as a traveller.

Remember, the Schengen area is large and diverse, so there’s no foreseeing exactly which places you’ll end up visiting, or what activities you’ll take part in.

How do I choose the right Schengen travel insurance?

Here are a few tips that I’ve gathered from my experiences travelling through the Schengen zone:

Firstly, your itinerary. Select one of two options:

  1. A simple round-trip, with certain dates and scheduled destinations.
  2. A trip with multiple destinations, common among backpackers and digital nomads travelling to different destinations in the same year.

Check all the details:

Make sure that the coverage is correct and that it is consistent with the activities you plan to take part in. For example, if you are going to practice extreme sports, it is essential that the policy have sports coverage.

In addition, it is important to check:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Natural disaster coverage
  • High-risk sports

If you have a pre-existing condition, such as a chronic disease or allergies, it’s essential to keep a medical record from your doctor. This must contain:

  • Summary of all the details of your current state of health
  • Medications that you take
  • Any other aspect that you consider necessary

Where to buy Schengen travel insurance?

Buying Schengen travel insurance is a basic process, and after reading our post, most of the hard work is done, as you already have at hand the best options on the insurance market!

Check out their websites and discover the prices for each of their insurance options for the Schengen area. Once you’ve obtained your travel insurance, and your Schengen visa, you’ll be ready to head out on your big European adventure!

Cheap Schengen travel insurance

If you’re a non-Schengen resident, then finding good value-for-money travel insurance to Schengen is a priority. That’s why it’s important to compare travel insurance and look for discounts to find the cheapest options in relation to their coverage.

Finding cheap Schengen travel insurance that covers all your needs requires a lot of online research, but you can save a lot, so it’ll be worth it in the end!

The biggest factors that will affect the ultimate price of your Schengen travel insurance include: the type of trip you’re taking, the number of travellers contracting together, and travel dates.

How to take out Schengen travel insurance

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to contract your travel insurance to Schengen zone countries:

The websites of the insurance companies I’ve mentioned are straightforward and intuitive, so don’t worry!

  1. Go to the website of the insurer of your choice and click on the insurance plan that you want to contract.
  2. Once you have selected the insurance, you will see a “Contract” button, or something similar. Click to start the contracting process.
  3. Once there, you will need to fill in your trip details. Firstly, the duration of the trip. Remember to check the policy’s renewal terms, for trips lasting longer than 12 months. Secondly, the number of travellers. Finally, the countries you will be visiting. For travel to the Schengen zone, select the option that says either, “Europe,” or “World excluding US/Canada.”
  4. Fill in the details of each traveller and add a supplement if necessary. This is usually the cancellation or adventure sports option.
  5. Read the insurance conditions carefully, and that’s it. You now have your Schengen travel insurance!

Is the Schengen area a safe place to travel?

Of course there are dangerous places within the Schengen area, but in general, it’s very safe. Your biggest concern in terms of safety is protecting your personal belongings, as petty crime is common in virtually every big European city.
