What are the entry requirements for Spain in 2026?
In early 2023, Spain lifted all Covid-19 related restrictions on all travellers, regardless of vaccination status, except travellers from China.
The main entry requirement to enter Spain is a valid passport. Your passport must have been issued within 10 years of entering Spain, and must be valid for at least 3 months after your departure date.
Do I need travel insurance for Spain?
If you are a European citizen, the EU’s freedom of movement initiative means you do not need travel insurance to enter Spain.
However, if you are a non-EU citizen, you will need Schengen travel insurance to enter that economic area. Schengen travel insurance refers to medical insurance that offers coverage for tourists travelling to any country within the Schengen area, including Spain.

- Once there, fill in your trip details. This will include the duration of your trip, the number of travellers contracting insurance, and the countries you’ll be visiting. Check the policy’s renewal terms for trips lasting longer than 12 months. For travel to the Schengen zone, select the option that says either, “Europe,” or “World excluding US/Canada.”
- Fill in the details of each traveller and add a supplement if necessary. This is usually the cancellation or adventure sports option.
- Read the insurance conditions carefully, and that’s it. You now have your travel insurance!
Is Spain a safe place for travel?
Spain, in general, is a safe country, and violent attacks against tourists or visitors are rare. However, petty crime is very common in the more touristy parts of the country, most notably, Barcelona.
While in Spain, you should always travel with a photocopy of your passport, and remain vigilant by keeping your valuables tightly secured while walking the streets. Don’t leave bags on your seat at a restaurant, instead, leave them between your legs.
