Before boarding your flight or cruise to New Zealand, you need to ensure that you have the correct travel documents. They are as follows:
- A valid passport. Your passport must not expire until 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand.
- A valid visa or NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority.
Do I need a visa or an NZeTA?
If you are an Australian national, you do not need a visa or NZeTA to travel to New Zealand.
If you are travelling with a passport from one of the following countries, you do not need a visa, but you do need to apply for an NZeTA.
You can request an NZeTA by following this link. The NZeTA:
- Is valid for 2 years for travellers.
- Has a processing time of approximately 72 hours.
- Costs $17.
If your country is not listed, you will have to apply for a visa to enter New Zealand. You can start the process on the New Zealand Immigration website.
Note that you may be asked to provide evidence of means of financial subsistence and a return air ticket, so it’s a good idea to have these things at hand before you travel.
Do you need travel insurance to go to New Zealand?
Travel insurance is not an explicit requirement to enter the country, but the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade strongly advises all travellers to take out travel insurance to New Zealand.
